Poker Games: Down with The Basics of Texas Hold’em! Texas Hold’em is the most popular form of poker played around the world. Therefore, by understanding the Texas Hold’em version, you’ll find learning more variants of poker much more straightforward as they more or less operate in the same lines. Some poker players, and it’s no more than a handful, really do have a genius for the game — an inexplicable, Picasso-like talent that isn’t easily defined and usually has to be seen to be believed. But even in the absence of genius — and most winning players certainly are not poker savants — poker is an eminently learnable skill. Inherent ability helps, and while you need some talent, you really don’t need all that much.

Texas Hold’em is the most popular type of online poker in the world. It’s played with a standard 52 card deck, and there can be between 2-10 players at a table.

To start with, the dealer gives everyone two-hole cards (your own personal cards that no-one else should see). There are then four betting rounds (which we’ll outline below), resulting in five cards being dealt face up on the table that every player uses (community cards). You must then use your hole cards and the community cards to make the best five-card hand possible.

All Texas Hold’em poker games on our site are ‘No Limit’, which means there is no limit to the maximum a player can bet at once. Thus, players can go “all-in” and bet all their chips on their betting turn.

Positions

The following are positions that you should know before playing the game.

  • Big blind - The player on the left of the small blind. The big blind is the same as the minimum bet size.
  • Small blind - The player immediately left of the dealer has to must post the small blind.
  • Dealer - Each hand has one designated dealer. The dealer position determines the small and big blind positions. The dealer button is passed clockwise after every hand.

Actions

  • Check - Check to complete your turn without betting. Remember that checking may be considered as a tell for possessing weak hands.
  • Bet - If you have a good hand, you may want to bet to win a bigger pot.
  • Raise - Tell your opponents that you're not messing around
  • Call - Call to look up your opponent's hands. Not all bets equate to strong hands.
  • All-in - Apply maximum pressure on your opponents.

The Showdown

The showdown begins when there are two players who are still in play when action ends on the river. The player with the strongest hand will take the pot. When the showdown ends in a tie, the pot is split evenly among the winning players.
